POLICY FOR HISTORY AT NORFOLK PARK SCHOOL
DECEMBER 2005
Aims
- To help children develop and increase their awareness of time, including their anticipation of what is about to happen and understanding of what has recently happened.
- To have enjoyable experiences in activities related to the teaching of history including exploration of historical artefacts and other historical information.
- To develop their ability to communicate historical knowledge by making simple choices between objects and identifying basic differences.
How We Plan And Teach History
The programme of study is based on QCA’s History programme of study, divided into KS1 and KS2 areas. The curriculum is adapted to enable suitable access for our pupils.
- History is taught in class lessons, by class teachers. Occasionally, it is presented to the school, either at KS1, KS2 or both, as a whole school event, eg the Olympics, Bonfire Night or a number of festivals which cover both History and RE.
Strategies for Pupil Learning
- Most pupils will be encouraged to take an active part in lessons. To enable full participation, some children are dependent upon staff to give them opportunities to engage in the lessons.
- Where possible during the school day, teachers will work on the methods of sequencing events and using words about the passage of time in order to enhance children’s understanding about themselves in a context of history.
Assessment, Recording and Reporting
- Assessments are made by teachers on an ongoing basis and notable progress is recorded in the PRAE files, or reported during weekly assemblies.
- Progress related to the understanding of the sequence of events and language related to this, is recorded in IEP’s, generally in the areas of English or Maths.
- Sample evidence of the work which children have produced or engaged in is either kept or photographed.
Arrangements For Monitoring By Subject Co-ordinator
- All classes have copies of the school’s History programme of study.
- Schemes of work for each study unit are required from teachers.
- Evidence is collected and stored by the history co-ordinator
Resources
- The subject co-ordinator is responsible for the purchase and upkeep of history resources.
